ISO and EPCglobal Protocols and Standards

The International Standards Organization (ISO) and EPCglobal are two organizations that work together to approve standards and protocols in order to provide universal specifications for RFID equipment. By creating global standards, these organizations enable the possibility of worldwide adoption of UHF RFID. Once ratified, protocols define communication methods approved with the air interface in conjunction with the operating frequency, channel bandwidth, frequency hop rate, etc.

The EPCglobal and ISO standards that are familiar today are largely due to the strides made by the Auto-ID Center from 1999 to 2003. The Auto-ID Center was, a non-profit organization made up of leaders in the RFID industry, and backed by large corporations like Walmart. In 1999 the Auto-ID Center created the first EPC standards as well as their own air interface protocol, both instrumental in attempting to commercialize UHF RFID. The other reason that the Auto-ID Center was so important is because it transitioned into two separate organizations: EPCglobal took over the commercialization of EPC technologies, while Auto-ID Labs continued the research and development role of the Auto-ID Center.

UHF 860–-960 MHz Mini Tag Applications Near Metallic Objects

This Mini RFID tag is part of Atom series of OPP IOT’s UHF tags, high-temperature resistant tags. These sturdy tags offer robust performance at an attractive price point. Constructed with durable flame retardant 4 (FR-4) laminate, these UHF tags can endure temperatures of 150 °C (even in oil), high humidity, and pressure of up to 15-bar. The tags also withstand vibration and mechanical shock. As well, they are resistant to chemical hazards such as sulfuric acid and salt water. OPP IOT’s family of RFID tags is EPC Class 1 Gen 2 and RoHS compliant and has an IP68 rating. The tags are available in frequencies for North America, Europe, and Japan. ACCESS CONTROL MANAGEMENT

To simply explain the technology that OPP IOT offers, RFID is a chip that goes onto a wristband/cards, and upon that chip, information is placed that can only be read by certain operators. On that chip, operators can build various zones of access within their festival or event.

Organizers can use the technology to control their own event, in particular to monitor crowd movement through different areas of their venue. VIP guests, for example, can enter an event through the gates with the general audience but the data stored on the chip will allow them access into restricted VIP zones as well.

EM4325

EM4325 is a Class-3 Generation-2 (Gen2) IC that is compliant with ISO/IEC 18000-63 (Gen2) & ISO/IEC 18000-64 (TOTAL) as well as EPCTM Class-1 Generation-2. The chip offers an advanced feature set leading to a performance beyond that of standard Gen2 chips and can be either battery powered or beam powered by the RF energy transmitted from a reader. In a battery assisted passive (BAP) configuration, the EM4325 offers superior reading range and reliability compared to purely passive RFID solutions.

EM4325 includes 4096 bits of high speed non-volatile memory (EEPROM) that is organized into 64 pages with 4 words per page. The chip supports either ISO or EPCTM data structures that are compliant with EPCglobal Tag Data Standards, Version 1.8, and is delivered with a Unique Identifier (UID) to ensure full traceability.

EM4325 supports advanced applications by providing programmable external interfaces for an auxiliary function and a 4-bit I/O port. The auxiliary function may be configured as an input for tamper detection or as an output for notification of RF events to external devices. The 4-bit I/O may be configured to support 4 discrete signals or as a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus. The chip may serve as either an SPI Master device or an SPI Slave device. The programmable external interfaces allow the EM4325 to function as an RF front end and protocol handler in advanced RFID tags or embedded applications. In a passive configuration, the programmable external interfaces allow the EM4325 to serve as a SPI Master with energy harvesting and provide power to external components.

Battery supply management is provided to prolong battery life in BAP applications. The chip supports programmable duty cycle control, auto-switching between battery powered and beam powered operation, and programmable enable/disable of an ultra-low power mode for extended storage applications.
